In 1958, J. Marshall and Rosemary McAteer opened McAteer’s Restaurant as a cafeteria to be filled with both college students and community members. The store served food on one side and school supplies on the other. Open from 6 am to 10 pm, the restaurant was specifically for the campus, but also the community. The McAteers had eight children, each of which worked in the restaurant growing up with their own shift. In the 1970s, the restaurant’s dinner model changed to breakfast & lunch and in 1982, Tim McAteer took the business over from his parents. McAteer’s Restaurant specializes in breakfast & lunch and is famous for its omelets of any kind, reubens, and club sandwiches. The business tries to keep its food products as close to home as possible, obtaining most of its meat and produce from the Fairmont and Clarksburg areas. When asked about the relationship with their customers, McAteer exclaimed “It’s wonderful. We know their birthdays and everything that’s going on.” He stated that they have frequent, loyal customers who will often bring the employees gifts as a token of their gratitude. This all is a product of the service that McAteer and his staff provides to the community. “Our service is wonderful. We try to be as personable as we can and care about the community and people that we work with.”

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

McAteer’s brings Irish heritage celebration to Fairmont

  •
  •
Tim McAteer, owner of McAteer’s, checks on corned beef that will be served today for St. Patrick’s Day.
FAIRMONT — Area residents interested in celebrating Irish heritage can do so today at McAteer’s.
Every year on St. Patrick’s Day McAteer’s offers a corned beef and cabbage meal.
McAteer’s employee Duane Cochran said the restaurant has been doing a version of the meal every year since the 2000s. He said it started small as a special thing and now it has grown into just offering the full meal.
The restaurant started serving just corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day in 2013, owner Tim McAteer said.
McAteer said the restaurant starts serving the meal at 9 a.m. It consists of corned beef, cabbage, red potatoes and a roll. McAteer’s opens at 9 a.m. today and closes when it runs out of food.
The cost is $14.50 for to-go orders and $16.50 for dine-in orders. The restaurant accepts cash and checks, but not credit cards, McAteer said.
The restaurant offers the meal as a way “to give Fairmont a little taste of the heritage of Fairmont and to say ‘Hey, this is what we do,’” McAteer said. “We like to share our heritage.”
On average, 300 people come to the St. Patrick’s Day meal at McAteer’s every year. That is double the normal amount of diners, McAteer said.
The preparation for the meal starts a week or more before St. Patrick’s Day.
“About a week or 10 days before, we’ll start boiling the corned beef,” McAteer said. “The night before we’ll start trimming and cutting the corn beef to size.”
The supplier McAteer’s orders the corned beef from sells it to them already seasoned. It is seasoned with pickling spices, old bay and other spices. The cut of meat is a brisket, McAteer said.
The corned beef sits in the fridge until it is time to be served. The night before St. Patrick’s Day it is sliced so it is ready for customers, he said.
The same people come every year with their families to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day at McAteer's. He plans on continuing this tradition, McAteer said.
McAteer is the youngest of eight children. His brother Joe and sisters Ellen, Cecily and Molly will come today and help him with the meal, he said.
“I love it, absolutely love it,” McAteer said about corned beef.
Corned beef is an acquired taste. A lot of people don’t like it, he said.
It’s not a real big meal in Ireland,” he said about corned beef and cabbage. “They have it, but its more of an Irish-American thing. I believe when the Irish came over here it was all they could afford.”

Fairmont Restaurant Honors Tradition With Classic St. Patrick's Day Menu

There's a tradition in Fairmont that has been celebrated for over 15 years. On St. Patrick's Day, locals in Marion County head over to McAteer's, where an Irish rooted family prepares a good Irish meal.
One thing you won't find on today's menu is different meal options. This can be a positive for locals who are indecisive when ordering food and negative for those who like different meal options. No matter the dispute, the sign is clear outside the door, stating that there is only one meal offered on St. Patrick's Day.
"This is a traditional Irish meal. It is corn beef, cabbage, red potatoes and a hard roll. In our heritage, I am Irish and our family always had it on St. Patty's Day and I thought we should have it here at the restaurant," said restaurant owner, Tim McAteer.
McAteer's Restaurant was serving people from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.

FAIRMONT — At McAteer’s in Fairmont, a family owned and operated restaurant, the owner says customers who have returned over the years feel like family.

Tim McAteer said he has watched customers grow up and has seen multiple generations of the same families enter his restaurant. He said the place has a small-town feel, even after surpassing 50 years of service.
“It’s funny,” McAteer said. “It’s been here a long time and it’s kind of like a vibe and hangout for the college, but it is also for the community.”
McAteer’s opened in 1958, but has been under the ownership of McAteer since 1982. He said his parents started the business to give students at Fairmont State University — then college — something to do off campus.
“At the time, there was nothing here for the college,” McAteer said. “That was even before the cafeteria opened for the school.”
McAteer said he is the youngest of eight children, all of whom worked at the restaurant throughout the years his parents owned the business. Despite being the youngest, the business fell to him when his brothers and sisters couldn’t take on the responsibility because of other jobs.
McAteer didn’t even think he would stick around after he went out of town for college, but now he said he can’t imagine doing anything else.
“I thought I’d never come back,” he said. “It’s funny how things change.”
Chip Tagg, an employee and customer at McAteer’s, said people eat there for the atmosphere.
“There are a lot of people here,” he said. “It’s friendly. It’s like Thanksgiving every day.”
Tagg also said people travel from Morgantown and other surrounding areas just to eat at McAteer’s.
“I really enjoy the people,” McAteer said. “I enjoy the challenge. We have a purpose. We have a good product, and we’re helping Fairmont be well prepared for their work day after they have a breakfast at McAteer’s.”
McAteer said part of the reason the business has been around for so long  is that it’s a restaurant family that cares about its community.
“We care about what’s going on,” he said. “We care about what’s happening in our neighborhood.”
When a customer’s bicycle of a customer broke and that customer couldn’t get home, McAteer said he loaned his own bike to that person. The customer later returned the bike.
At the entrance of the store is a handpainted parking meter that customers can insert coins into to benefit Watson Elementary School. McAteer said the meter was the senior project of a student at the college.
“I think we are an integral part of the community,” he said. “If McAteer’s closed, I think we would be missed. Some families have been here for two or three generations.”
The restaurant also is a place to absorb a little bit of history about Fairmont State University. McAteer said he has collections of yearbooks from the college dating back as far as the 1960s.
“The food’s good, but the atmosphere is probably better,” said Rob Marra, a customer and student at the university. “To me, the atmosphere is a small diner feel. Every time you come in, you always see someone you know. I guess that’s kind of hard to find when you travel.”
Marra said the restaurant is a popular spot for basketball and football team members to hang out.
With a focus on breakfast and lunch entrees, McAteer’s is open from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There are many different wraps, salads, omelets, club sandwiches and more to choose from on the menu, some featuring a unique flair.
For instance, customers can order a club sandwich with egg, a steak sandwich or a meat lover’s omelet and much more. McAteer said the restaurant features sausage which is made locally.
“You can just about make any omelet you want to,” McAteer said.
McAteer said the restaurant has a different daily special, and despite the hot weather, it sells soups, too.
He said McAteer’s has become an attraction in Fairmont and is one of three places people passing through want to go during their stay.
