‘It’s fun to be Irish’

Food helps make St. Patrick’s Day a special event

FAIRMONT — “I may not be Irish, but it’s fun to be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day,” said Charles Long as he sat down for lunch at McAteer’s restaurant Wednesday.
Long dined on Irish fare such as corn beef, cabbage, potatoes, cobbler and hard rolls.
“Today is special because of the Irish food,” said Long, 86, of Hundred, who was wearing a green shirt. “I’d say the food is very good.”
There was a miniature Irish flag inside a vase filled with a bouquet of clovers on Long’s table. Long’s lunch companion, Cora Martin, 82, of Farmington, said, “We come here all the time, but never on St. Patrick’s Day. But after this meal, I think we will come here from now on for St. Patrick’s Day.”
